Naturally Dye a Beanie with Sea Urchins · October 10
As part of North Coast Kelp Fest, we’re excited to bring this hands-on workshop to the Mendocino Art Center, exploring the unexpected connection between kelp forest conservation and natural dye. You’ll learn how purple sea urchins can be transformed into beautiful, lasting shades of pink while creating your own Fibershed Climate Beneficial™ Verified premium Merino wool beanie to take home.
Together, we’ll explore the process of responsibly harvesting and processing sea urchins, preparing a dye bath, and creating the richest, most vibrant pinks. Along the way, you’ll hear the story behind Seelie Studio’s sea urchin dye practice — including the experiments, discoveries, and many techniques that helped shape the process. We’ll also learn about purple sea urchins and their important role in our coastal ecosystems, and how climate change and other human impacts have contributed to urchin overpopulation and the loss of nearly 95% of California’s kelp forests.
Come curious, get your hands messy, and spend an afternoon learning, making, and connecting with the ocean’s story through color and fiber.
