About the urchin dye activity:
In this one-hour activity, you’ll dye a Climate Beneficial™ wool bandana with natural dye made from purple sea urchins. Why? Purple urchins have eaten over 95% of the kelp along California’s coast. Seelie Studio is helping the kelp by creating dye from the overpopulation of urchins. Explore how creative practices can reconnect us to stewardship and ocean conservation with Margaret, the founder of Seelie Studio.
This mini-workshop is designed to allow you to dip your bandana in the dye, then you are welcome to leave your fabric with Margaret while you enjoy the festivities. Your fabric will absorb the dye for one hour or more then you will return and pick it up before you leave.
*This activity does not include Margaret’s lecture or offer a comprehensive understanding of the urchin dye process and its environmental impacts. It’s an abbreviated version where you can dye fabric and connect with oceanic color.
