Dye Fabric with Sea Urchins

Dye Fabric with Sea Urchins - Workshop
from $150.00

Aquarium of the Bay

October 17

10:00 AM – 2:00 PM

Dye Fabric with Sea Urchins · October 17

Join Seelie Studio at Aquarium of the Bay for a hands-on natural dyeing workshop inspired by California’s kelp forests!

Using purple sea urchins sourced from California’s coastal ecosystems, we’ll create beautiful peach and salmon-toned color while learning about the ecological story behind the “urchin problem,” kelp forest decline, and ongoing restoration efforts.

Each participant will select a beanie or a bandana to dye during the workshop:

You’ll learn the chemistry and process behind sea urchin dyeing as you transform your chosen piece. Along the way, we’ll connect art, science, and ocean conservation — and discover how an ecological challenge can inspire beautiful, meaningful color.

Come slow down, work with your hands, and dive deeper into the fascinating relationship between sea urchins, kelp forests, and California’s coast.

All skill levels are welcome!
